This one-day workshop provides the knowledge and resources to help establish and sustain comprehensive school safety and crisis prevention and preparedness efforts. With updated research and strategies, this workshop makes a clear connection between ongoing school safety and crisis preparedness. It also emphasizes the unique needs and functions of school teams and the steps involved in developing these teams, including a model that integrates school personnel and community provider roles. The workshop also explores how to prepare for school crises by developing, exercising, and evaluating a safety and crisis plan, which will help improve school climate, student behavior and academic functioning, student resilience, and staff crisis response capabilities.
NASP PREPaRE Workshop 1 is appropriate for a range of audiences including graduate students, interns, novice and experienced school psychologists, as well as teachers, mental health professionals, security professionals, and administrators.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
1. Identify key characteristics of a crisis event
2. Explain the four phases of crisis management
3. List the three concepts related to crime prevention through environmental design and four elements related to promoting psychological safety
4. Analyze the guiding principles in crisis plan development
5. Discuss three strategies for examining the effectiveness of crisis prevention and preparedness.
