In June 2022, the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) releases a key report: Moving Beyond Change Efforts: Supporting and Affirming LGBTQ+ Youth. This is an important effort by the US government to reduce behavioral health inequities faced by LGBTQ+ children, adolescents and their families. The report provides detailed clinical guidance on sexual orientation, gender identity and mental health in childhood.
This two hour CE presentation reviews the report’s scientific recommendations and provides training in a) clinical care for individuals and families; b) school policies and interventions by educational professionals; c) ethical and legal issues for professionals, parents, and caregivers. The attendees will receive training in age-appropriate and evidence-based treatments for LGBTQ+ children, adolescents, and parents, and caregivers. The scientific evidence supports ending sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts and ensuring access to age-appropriate sexual orientation and gender affirming care, which is essential for positive behavioral health outcomes. The training details the latest clinical guidelines in emerging areas such as gender transition and affirmation for minors. Common concerns of parents, and family therapy approaches for parents are addressed. This presentation provides information about school policies that reduce risks of mental health problems, antidiscrimination and antibullying policies, affirming and supportive school climates, and improving behavioral health in school-aged children. The final section addresses existing federal and state policies, especially those laws for clinicians and schools locally that impact treatment of LGBTQ+ minors.

- Explain the key scientific findings on the benefits of affirming approaches for LGBTQ+ children and adolescents and harms of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity change efforts
- Apply the latest scientific evidence on sexual orientation and gender affirming care to clinical practice and training
- Utilize scientific evidence on LGBTQ+ youth to improve school policies and other efforts to improve mental health
Instructor Bio
Judith Glassgold, PsyD has over 30 years experience as clinical psychologist and consultant on LGBTQ+ mental health. She is a Lecturer at Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology. She served as a subject matter expert to the federal government and national civil rights organizations and led scientific association and federal reports on appropriate therapeutic efforts with LGBTQ+ children, adolescents, and individuals. Previously, she served as Director of Professional Affairs at the New Jersey Psychological Association, Research Fellow at the Center for Health and Wellbeing at Princeton University, and Associate Executive Director for Public Interest at the American Psychological Association, and as a health policy advisor in Congress. Glassgold has published over 60 articles and chapters on LGBTQ+ mental health and presented extensively on LGBTQ+ mental health. She holds a doctorate in clinical psychology from Rutgers University and a BA with honors in government from Harvard-Radcliffe College.
