Admissions Qualifications
To be considered for admission into our Clinical or School PsyD programs, please have the following:
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree with a preferable major of psychology
- An excellent scholastic record
- CV/resume
- Recommendations from at least 3 people who can attest to your academic and personal qualifications
- Appropriate applicant statements as per the application form
- The completion of these required courses (with at least 1 lab component):
- A. Introduction to psychology
- B. Statistics
- C. Abnormal psychology
- D. Biological bases of psychology
- Biopsychology is the science of the biological bases of human behavior, the field that concerns itself with linking function with brain structure. This science is also sometimes referred to as “functional neuroanatomy” or “behavioral neuroanatomy”. It is impossible to understand human behavior without some level of understanding of the physical structure of the brain, the organ that enables behavior.
- E. 1 to 2 courses in the following areas:
- i. cognitive psychology
- ii. psychology of perception
- iii. conditioning, and learning
- iv. developmental psychology; psychology of personality
- v. social psychology
Note: The Clinical and School Psychology PsyD programs do NOT require the General nor Psychology GRE for admissions.
We do not provide feedback about a prospective applicant’s undergraduate curriculum to determine whether applicants meet any of the above criteria this includes pre-requisite courses. During the admissions process, each applicant will be asked to describe how they have met each criteria, or will meet each criteria, prior to matriculation in any doctoral program. It will be up to each candidate to describe how their prior coursework meets the content requirements above. During the interview process or once an applicant is offered admission, the program will give feedback to individual students.
To be considered for admission into our Applied Psychology programs, please have the following:
Organizational Psychology (PsyD):
- A completed application
- 2 letters of recommendation
- CV/resume
- Personal statement (about 1,000 words)
- Transcripts of all undergraduate and/or graduate course work

Master's of Applied Psychology (MAP):
- Minimum 3.0 GPA in Undergraduate or Associate degree transcripts
- Two letters of recommendation
- A professional statement
- Transcripts from all previously attended schools
- Undergraduate BA in psychology
Note: GRE scores are no longer required.
Master's in Applied Behavior Analysis (MABA)
- Minimum 3.0 GPA in Undergraduate or Associate degree transcripts
- Two letters of recommendation
- A professional statement
- Transcripts from all previously attended schools
- Previous courses or work experience in applied behavior analysis
Note: GRE scores are no longer required.
The following are prerequisite courses for both the MAP and MABA Master's programs:
- General Psychology
- Statistics
- One additional Psychology elective (Ex: Personality Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Social Psychology, or Developmental Psychology)
Application Process
Applications can be found online.

- A personal statement (1.5 to 2 pages or 750 to 1000 words) sent electronically describing experiences related to, and commitment to, pursuing a career in professional psychology and a doctoral degree

- Indication of the program you are applying for
- If you are a foreign exchange student, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is also required
- TOEFL can be waived if the applicant can show English capabilities

GSAPP-Specific
GSAPP's academic programs are primarily self-funded. Rutgers GSAPP (see Tuition and Fees) offers limited funding opportunities for students. Students may receive financial aid assistance that is merit-based, need-based, or non-need based. The level of support awarded is dependent on the specific graduate program and degree status. Pre-Application Preparation

Although program applicants can send potential program faculty mentors an email about experience and fit, please do not be offended if the faculty member does not respond to your inquiry. Our faculty are very busy with clinical research and training! Because we routinely get hundreds applications annually, generic program emails such as “tell me more information about the program” will likely not be responded to, nor will requests for preliminary virtual meetings to discuss fit. Only emails exhibiting clear, specific questions and demonstrating that you’ve read our online materials will be responded to. General information on the program can be found on this page, please familiarize yourself with these materials prior to reaching out to us. Yes, if an applicant is accepted and chooses to attend a program, they are expected to complete their outstanding prerequisite requirements prior to beginning class in the fall semester. Prerequisites can be completed at an accredited institution.

No, a student can apply to any of our doctoral programs directly from having earned a bachelor’s degree. In some cases, a Master’s degree is advised as a good way for prospective applicants to develop more experience (both clinical and research) in the field.

No, Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology accepts and considers applications from applicants of diverse academic backgrounds. However, for all applicants from non-psychology (or other related fields) academic backgrounds, we require that they fulfill all listed prerequisite courses prior to the first day of class, if accepted.

No. However, all applicants are expected to have taken approximately 15 undergraduate credits in psychology, including statistics, experimental and abnormal. Other prerequisites apply.

Applicants are restricted from applying to more than one (1) doctoral psychology program in New Brunswick each term. Applying to more than one program may significantly delay your application.

Each PsyD program is designed to be completed in five years. Students must complete four years of coursework (including externships) and a full-time internship in their fifth year.

Clinical PsyD Program & School PsyD Program: The Clinical & School Psychology PsyD programs will NOT require the general GRE's or GRE subject test and will NOT consider them as part of any application package (i.e., the application process will not have you submit or forward scores).GRE's are not required, even though the catalog still lists them as a requirement.

All programs for the Departments of Clinical and School Psychology start in the Fall without rolling admissions.
Applied Psychology Programs:
- The Organizational Psychology PsyD Program begins in the fall only, without rolling admissions.
- The Master of Applied Psychology Program begins in both the fall and spring, without rolling admissions.
- The Master of Applied Behavior Analysis Program begins in the fall only, without rolling admissions.
- The Accelerated Bachelor to Master of Applied Psychology Program begins in the fall and spring, without rolling admissions.
- The Applied Behavior Analysis Certificate begins in the fall and spring, with rolling admissions.

Letters of recommendation should speak to your capabilities, strengths, and likelihood of success in our programs. These letters are typically from professors, mentors, and/or employers.

No, applicants are accepted to Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology based on optimal class size and the strength of their own application and interview performance. Faculty advisors are assigned after acceptance is offered.

Interviews for admission into the doctoral programs take place in mid-February.

No, each admissions committee selects applicants for interviews from the application pool, based on their respective admissions criteria.

Application Final Decisions

If accepted/waitlisted applicants are notified via email and the portal. If not accepted, notifications of non-acceptance is sent via the portal. Applicants have until April 15th to accept their offer via the portal.

You will receive a certificate of admission by email from the RU admissions office and there will be a direct link to your application where you can accept or deny admission.
