4+1 Program (Accelerated Bachelor's to Master of Applied Psychology)

Overview

The Master of Applied Psychology 4+1 program is a collaborative partnership between two distinguished Rutgers schools, the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) and the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS). This accelerated pathway enables eligible students to earn both a bachelor's and a master's degree in five years. It provides a smooth transition to graduate study while saving time and advancing one’s academic and professional goals.

The 4+1 Program offers graduate instruction in the scientific basis of multiple areas of applied psychology with a commitment to social justice and cultural humility. Students gain the knowledge and skills needed to understand human behavior, develop competencies in quantitative and qualitative research methods, and explore the assessment and treatment of behavioral challenges and psychological disorders.

Graduate Pathways & Career Preparation

This convenient path provides practicum and applied research experience needed to meet competitive admission criteria for those wishing to pursue careers in applied psychology and/or doctoral level studies and reducing the cost of graduate education. The MAP program emphasizes critical thinking, ethical practice, cultural humility, and social justice, which equips graduates to address complex psychological and behavioral challenges across diverse populations and settings.

Admissions and Requirements

Students are eligible to apply via the grad portal before the end of their junior academic year if they will have 90 credits by time of entry into the program. 

SAS Students Must:

  • Be working toward a BA in Psychology at the time of application
  • Have a minimum 3.5 GPA at the completion of 90 credits 

Prerequisite Courses:

  • General Psychology (01:830:101)
  • One SAS Psychology elective (300 level or above)
  • Statistics (01:830:200 or 01:830:400)
