For Prospective Students

- Completed application materials and a check for $70 to cover the application fee
- Official transcripts from each graduate and undergraduate institution attended. These can be sent electronically (recommended) to e-transcripts@gradadm.rutgers.edu or mailed in a sealed envelope.
- Three Letters of Recommendation must be sent electronically (Can be from a professor of a previous program or, if employed, from a past employer/manager/supervisor)
- A Personal Statement must be sent electronically
- Prerequisite courses in psychology (see below)
- Resume must be sent electronically

Students entering the programs at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology do not need to major in psychology, but they are generally expected to have taken the main courses for an undergraduate major in the field. Before entering the program, students must have taken courses covering the following areas:
- Introductory Psychology
- Statistics
- Abnormal Psychology
- Biological Bases of Psychology
Students also should have taken at least one and preferably two courses in the following areas:
- Cognitive Psychology
- Psychology of Perception
- Conditioning and Learning
- Developmental Psychology
- Psychology of Personality
- Social Psychology
It is preferred that one of the above-listed courses has a laboratory component. Applications are welcome from Rutgers students who are properly prepared with good academic records and references!

Yes, if an applicant is accepted and chooses to attend a program, they are expected to complete their outstanding prerequisite requirements prior to beginning class in the fall semester. Prerequisites can be completed at an accredited institution.

No, a student can apply to any of our doctoral programs directly from having earned a bachelor’s degree. In some cases, a Master’s degree is advised as a good way for prospective applicants to develop more experience (both clinical and research) in the field.

Applicants are restricted from applying to more than one (1) doctoral psychology program in Rutgers University - New Brunswick each term. Applying to more than one program may significantly delay your application.

The GRE Psychology Subject Test is required only for the Clinical PsyD program.

Acceptance notifications vary per program. For our Clinical and School PsyD programs, by April 1.

Not all applicants are selected for interviews. If you are chosen, you will receive an email invitation. Interview days typically occur in mid-February.

Each PsyD program is designed to be completed in five years. Students must complete four years of coursework (including externships) and a full-time internship in their fifth year.

Applied Psychology Programs:
The Organizational Psychology PsyD Program begins in the fall only, without rolling admissions.
The Master of Applied Psychology (MAP) Program begins in the fall only without rolling admissions.
The Master of Applied Behavior Analysis (MABA) Program begins in the fall only, without rolling admissions.
The 4+1/Accelerated Bachelor to Master of Applied Psychology Program begins in the fall and spring, without rolling admissions.
The Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Certificate begins in the fall and spring, with rolling admissions.

While we do not offer part-time doctoral programs, many students enrolled in our master’s and certificate programs are able to work part-time while enrolled.

To maximize classroom learning and practical experiences, full-time employment is not compatible with the doctoral programs. Students are encouraged to focus on their studies and clinical training during the program.

Straight transfers between GSAPP programs are not permitted. If you wish to change academic programs, you must submit a new application and meet all admissions requirements for the program of interest.

Applicants with international transcripts must obtain a credential evaluation from a recognized third-party service. The evaluation should verify the academic record and provide U.S. degree and GPA equivalencies.

No, applicants are accepted to Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology based on optimal class size and/or the strength of their own application and interview performance. Faculty advisors are assigned after acceptance is offered.

Please check your schedule on https://sims.rutgers.edu/webreg/ with your NetID and password. You can also log in with your RUID and PAC (four-digit birth month and day, e.g., 0000). Once logged in, please choose the semester, for example (Fall 2025), and you will see the courses listed on the right side of the screen.

It is not possible to register for classes until your immunizations have been submitted and verified. This should be completed as soon as possible after accepting your admission to the program. You will receive more information about this in your admittance email from the program coordinator.

To apply for a student parking pass, please use this link: https://ipo.rutgers.edu/dots/permits/students. Please note, parking passes for students are campus specific, and you will need to navigate from campus to campus by RU bus if your parking pass is not on the campus where your classes are located. Also, passes for certain campuses will sell-out, so you should purchase a permit as soon as possible once semester permits go on sale. The parking website will indicate when permits are on sale – check frequently in the weeks leading up to the semester!
