There has been much presented on the racial trauma in Black America and certainly much more needed. This presentation seeks to advance this conversation from a problem focused one to a solution focused one. This presenter recognizes that “solution” is highly complex, multi-pronged, multi-layered, and multi-faceted. It is not within the scope of this presentation, therefore, to propose a “treatment” for racial trauma but rather build a frame for thinking about healing racial trauma, from within which race-informed therapeutic ideas technique, and strategy can evolve. Presenter will also provide a cursory overview of extant forms of healing often overlooked in mainstream literature.

Instructor
Dr. Monique Swift, proprietor of Swift Solutions Consultant Services, LLC, is a psychologist, an NJ Licensed Professional Counselor, and a NY Licensed Mental Health Counselor. She has over 20 years of experience in the field of mental health and operates a private practice in Rahway, NJ where she specializes in couple’s therapy and trauma. In addition to her clinical work, Monique also provides curriculum design, personal development workshops, professional trainings, and keynote presentations. She consults with religious, community-based, and non-profit organizations, public and private schools, as well as with private groups. Monique is particularly proud of her consulting work with Equal Justice USA, collaborating in the development and delivery of a curriculum to teach trauma-informed responses, to police officers and community leaders in the city of Newark, NJ. Monique does extensive volunteer work, which tends to either directly or indirectly benefit oppressed and underserved populations and typically involves grassroots and civic organizing, personal and community empowerment, and addresses issues of racial equity, racial trauma, and social justice. Monique serves as a member of the Board of Advisors for Volunteers of America, Torchlight Educational Academy, the Union County Juvenile Conference Committee under the Family Division of the Superior Court, and is currently serving as President of the New Jersey chapter of the Association of Black Psychologist. Monique’s special interests include youth empowerment, race and social issues, and holistic health.
