Kamilah Legette Award Article

GSAPP is proud to congratulate Dr. Kamilah Legette, Asst. Professor in the School Psychology Department and Director of the Reducing Inequities in Student Education (RISE) Lab, on receiving the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Research Award (DEIRA) from the Society for the Study of School Psychology (SSSP)!

This highly competitive award recognizes scholars whose research advances diverse and innovative scholarship while promoting equity, inclusion, and meaningful change in educational settings.

Dr. Legette's research explores how schooling experiences shape youth development, how teachers' racial biases influence classroom practices, and how social emotional learning can address racism and reduce disparities in students' educational experiences and outcomes.

Through the RISE Lab, she partners with schools and communities to conduct research that promotes equitable learning environments and supports student success. Her work helps educators implement evidence-based practices that foster belonging, opportunity, and positive outcomes for all students.

One example is the Social-Emotional Teaching and Equitable Practices (STEP) professional development program, which equips educators with race- and gender-conscious teaching strategies through workshops, reflection, and individualized coaching.

This well-deserved recognition reflects Dr. Legette's commitment to advancing Educational Equity through impactful research, meaningful partnerships, and innovative approaches that support students, educators, and school communities.

Congratulations, Dr. Legette, on this outstanding achievement!
