Group Therapy for Complex Trauma: A Schema Informed Approach
Description
Over the past four decades, much has been learned about early childhood trauma and the treatment of its symptoms. Definitions of trauma have expanded to include a range of experiences that overwhelm the individual’s capacity to cope. These are as nuanced as the treatment approaches therapists use to help their patients heal from the effects of their early traumatic experiences. Treatment options vary, and the importance of defining the most appropriate course of therapy that best fits each patient must be addressed. The patient’s needs are best served when armed with a well-stocked toolbox that incorporates group treatment, informed by Schema Therapy, as an adjunct to individual therapy for Complex Trauma. This workshop will present an approach for the group treatment of complex trauma that incorporates the principles of Schema Therapy. The presentation will include audience participation in experiential interventions highlighting the use of schema therapy strategies.

Participants will:
- Be able to describe the major principles and strategies of Schema Therapy.
- Integrate schema informed group therapy into current approaches to the treatment of complex trauma.
- Address the cognitive, behavioral, emotional and somatic sequelae of complex trauma within a group setting.
