Description

     The landscape of clinical psychology is evolving rapidly, with telepsychology becoming increasingly prevalent since the Covid-19 pandemic. Ensuring ethical and culturally sensitive practice across jurisdictions is important, but can pose unique challenges for psychologists. This presentation explores the intersection of interjurisdictional clinical practice and cultural humility, emphasizing the importance of integrating cultural competencies into telepsychology interventions.
     Drawing from recent literature, this presentation will examine the critical role of cultural humility in delivering effective telepsychology services to diverse populations in the United States. The necessity of tailoring services to meet specific cultural needs will be underscored. Practical strategies for promoting culturally competent telepsychology practice, including understanding cultural nuances and ongoing training, will be discussed.
     In addition  regulatory challenges impacting psychologists' ability to provide culturally sensitive services across jurisdictions will be addressed. By exploring licensing regulations and potential regulatory barriers, we aim to support psychologists with the knowledge and tools to help navigate interjurisdictional practice ethically and effectively.
     This presentation seeks to empower psychologists to enhance their cultural humility and integrate cultural competencies into their telepsychology practice, ultimately ensuring equitable access to quality mental health care for all populations, regardless of geographical location or cultural background.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of integrating cultural humility into inter-jurisdictional clinical practice for psychologists, including telepsychology, to effectively serve diverse populations.
  • Identify strategies and considerations for promoting ethical and culturally sensitive telepsychology practice across jurisdictions.

Instructor Bio

Dr. Jessica Jackson is an award-winning licensed psychologist and mental health equity advocate. She is the founder of Therapy Is For Everyone Psychological & Consultation Services, PLLC, a Houston, TX based mental health practice providing expert care and mental health start-up advisory services. Dr. Jackson is also the co-founder of the non-profit Communicating Race Fully, focused on teaching youth and their caregivers how to have conversations about race and racism. Her research has focused on reducing barriers to treatment for underserved populations. She is a regular media contributor and serves as an elected member of the American Psychological Association Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest, Vice Chair of Therapist in Tech and Chair of the APA Mental Health Technology Advisory Committee.
