Description
This session will assist clinicians with understanding the impact working with individuals with mental illness has on their minds, bodies, and spirit. Clinicians will examine the many ways in which they are exposed to trauma, followed by information to help them gain an appreciation for self-care in addition to identifying ways to combat secondary traumatic stress.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Participants will identify potentially traumatizing events they may encounter within mental health settings.
- Participants will be able to describe vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress and organizational stress.
- Participants will be able to identify the impact of stress on their bodies and minds.
- Participants will be able to describe the importance of self-care.
Instructor Bio
Dr. Jennifer Jones-Damis is a licensed Psychologist in NY and NJ. She has focused her career on understanding and addressing traumatic stress and racial trauma in individuals and systems. Dr. Jones-Damis facilitates trainings and workshops for schools, organizations, and companies to increase knowledge about the impact stress and racial trauma has on mental health while offering tangible ways to promote resilience. Dr. Jones-Damis is the Director of Counseling, ADAP, and Psychiatric Services at Rutgers University and holds positions on the state and national boards of The Association of Black Psychologists.
