The GSAPP Distinguished Achievement Award is named in honor of the founders of the GSAPP Alumni Organization (AO) It may be given only to alumni of GSAPP, who have distinguished themselves by contributions they have made in their chosen fields of endeavor, by the leadership they have exhibited, and by the general benefits to the larger society resulting from their activities. The primary criteria are: (1) recognition for lifelong distinguished achievement and/or (2) a one-time distinguished achievement. This year’s recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Award is Diane Smallwood, Psy.D., NCSP. (Class of 1985). During her career, Dr. Smallwood worked as a School Psychologist through the South Brunswick Board of Education, the Lower Camden County Regional High School District No 1, and the Dunellen Public Schools. She has been a Consultant/Item Writing Specialist at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton. In this role, she assisted with the development of new Praxis examinations in the areas of school psychology and special education and collaborated on all aspects of test development for the school psychology examination, including participating on a national panel of experts who contributed to the development of a job analysis survey for school psychologists. Dr. Smallwood also served as a Program Evaluation Coordinator through the New Jersey Secondary Special Education Initiative in the Lower Camden County Regional High School District No 1. She has been an adjunct faculty member at Rider University, GSAPP, and Lehigh University. Since July 2004, Dr. Smallwood has been an Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Training at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia. In addition, Dr. Smallwood has assumed numerous state and national leadership positions, including Regional Delegate, Secretary, and President of the New Jersey Association of School Psychologists and President and Strategic Planning and Organizational Development Coordinator for the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). She has received several awards and honors, including the Service to School Psychology Award, the NASP Appreciation Award, and the NASP Presidential Award twice! Dr. Smallwood has presented nationally, published papers in peer-reviewed journals, and written several books and book chapters.
