Description
Presentation will focus on the value and ways that immigrants of different status use their voice and the purpose, process, and value of listening to immigrants to the United States. The processes highlighted challenge unjust power differences and encourage collaboration across power and cultural differences. Two migrants (one DACA status, one Refugee status) will express their story and the role of using their voice as a path to healing and creating community in the U.S. Presenter and audience participation will be encouraged in a framework purposeful participation seeking to undo the consequences of unjust community practices relating to DACA and refugee practices in the U.S.

- Describe the cultural context of their own voice and effectively direct the purpose and relationship to immigrant communities when conversing with them and on their behalf.
Instructors
Bruno Oriti is a psychologist and Director of Mental Health Services at RCHP-AHC, Interfaith RISE, a New Jersey church-based nonprofit providing resettlement services to over 4000 refugees and asylum seekers placed into forced migration by war and other forms of political violence. Dr. Oriti has over 35 years of clinical experience and community based social justice work serving families and individuals over the life span. His professional and community endeavors included family systems approaches to direct service and supervision/training in multicultural family systems interventions. Dr. Oriti has particular interest in establishing community-based systems of care that address the impacts of social oppression, including migration, on health and other aspects of community, family and individual well-being. He believes in direct action to promote people to create participatory and empowered community based activity and healing. Examples of these efforts included organizing NJ teens traveling to New Orleans in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina in collaboration with the local rebuilding efforts of The Common Ground Collective; and, teaming with The Haitian American Psychiatric Association in providing a mental health fair addressing the needs of the Haitian refugee community living in Trenton, NJ.
Belen is a graduate student interested in researching the mental and physical health disparities among undocumented and refugee populations. She hopes to find ways to help close the gaps in access to culturally appropriate care for these groups, especially due to her proximity to the southern border. Belen’s thesis focuses on DACA and undocumented college students and their decision to disclose their status on campus through the lens of Privacy Management Theory and how this decision relates to their well-being. These finding provide a better understanding of how these students navigate the disclosure process and their needs while attending higher education institutions.
The instructors do not have any commercial support and/or conflict of interest for this program.
