In this paper, the researchers strive to address the challenge from leadership scholars to empirically examine the complex topic of leadership using rigorous qualitative methods of leaders in field settings. They applied thematic analysis techniques to transcripts of over 350 hours of critical incident interviews from 143 senior executives who held senior positions in Fortune 500 companies across a range of industries and geographies around the world. They employed thematic analysis to quantify qualitative data regarding critical business situations and associated competencies, and then examined those against a set of defined competencies.
