Description

High conflict separated parents (HCSPs) involve parents who are divorced or separated and who are engaging in ongoing, intense, and often adversarial disputes related to various aspects of co-parenting and child-rearing.  Court involvement and litigation are routinely indicated in these families, with children caught in the middle of their parents’ disputes.  Additionally, many of these families have histories of domestic violence, child abuse and maltreatment and trauma.  As such, these cases are almost always highly complex as well as stressful and exhausting for treatment providers.  This training will provide clinical practitioners with background and information about HCSP families, common family dynamics that are encountered in therapy, as well as therapeutic intervention strategies for addressing domestic violence, intra-familial abuse and trauma, and parental alienation and estrangement. Dr. Misurell will bring his years of experience and expertise from providing therapeutic interventions for high conflict divorce and court-involved families into this practical presentation.

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe ways in which divorce and separation can negatively impact children.
  • Outline positive and negative ways of dissolving a marriage.
  • Identify and describe high conflict divorce and separation dynamics.
  • Describe how patterns of domestic violence contribute to high conflict divorce.
