Bio

Stanley B. Messer, PhD, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, is former Dean (2001-2016) of GSAPP and former Chair of its Clinical Psychology Department (1993-2001). He earned his MA and PhD at Harvard University. A past president (2018) of the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 2017. Dr. Messer has published extensively on the application of psychodynamic theory and research to brief and integrative therapies as well as on evidence-based practice. His most recent co-edited volumes are Case Studies Within Psychotherapy Trials (2017) and Essential Psychotherapies: Theory and Practice, 4th edition (in press). Dr. Messer is an Associate Editor of the online journal Pragmatic Case Studies in Psychotherapy and maintains a practice of psychotherapy in Highland Park, NJ.
